What to Expect on Your First IELTS Speaking Test
If you're new to IELTS, the speaking section might feel intimidating. But knowing what to expect can make you feel confident and prepared. Here's a breakdown of what happens before, during, and after your test.
Before the Test
- Bring your ID and arrive early
- You'll be escorted to a quiet room with the examiner
- The test will be recorded for accuracy
Part 1: Introduction & Interview
The examiner will ask simple questions about yourself—work, studies, family, hobbies. This is a warm-up to test your general communication skills.
Part 2: Long Turn
You’ll receive a cue card and have 1 minute to prepare. Then you’ll speak for 1–2 minutes on the topic. Don’t worry if you stop early—the examiner may ask follow-ups.
Part 3: Two-Way Discussion
This section involves deeper, opinion-based questions about the Part 2 topic. Use linking words, examples, and extended answers.
After the Test
Your results will be available within a few days. Scores are based on fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
Conclusion
The IELTS speaking test is more of a conversation than an interrogation. With daily practice using USpeak, you’ll feel more confident and perform better on the big day.
