Master IELTS Speaking Part 3: Strategy & Sample Answers

IELTS Speaking Part 3 tests your ability to discuss abstract topics, express opinions, justify your ideas, and analyze complex issues. It’s more formal and demanding than Part 1 or Part 2, and it can truly affect your overall speaking score.

What Happens in Part 3?

After your cue card (Part 2), the examiner will ask follow-up questions related to the same theme. For example, if Part 2 was about a teacher you admire, Part 3 questions could be about education systems or qualities of effective teaching.

Key Strategies to Succeed

  1. Structure your answer: Use a simple format — opinion, reason, example, alternative view.
  2. Use linking phrases: Such as “From my perspective…”, “One reason might be…”, “In contrast…”, “It depends on…”
  3. Expand naturally: Don’t give one-sentence answers. Aim for 4–6 sentences per answer.
  4. Use advanced vocabulary: Talk about causes, effects, trends, and societal impact using topic-specific terms.

Band 9 Sample Answer

Q: Why do people change their jobs?

A: In my opinion, people often change their jobs to pursue better opportunities or to find work that aligns more with their personal values. For instance, someone might switch from a corporate job to a non-profit organization because they want to contribute to society. Additionally, career shifts can be driven by financial needs, burnout, or the desire to explore new challenges. It’s quite common in today’s dynamic work environment.

Common Topics in Part 3

  • Education & learning methods
  • Technology & innovation
  • Work-life balance
  • Environmental challenges
  • Cultural values

Final Tip

Record yourself answering real IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions. Review your recordings, identify filler words, and improve clarity. The more comfortable you get discussing complex topics, the better your fluency and coherence will become.
