TOEFL Writing Task: How to Score 25+ with a Clear Template

Many TOEFL candidates find the Writing section stressful — but with the right template and practice strategy, you can consistently score 25 or above. In this guide, we’ll walk through both writing tasks: the Integrated Essay and the Independent Essay.

“Good writing is clear thinking made visible.” – Bill Wheeler

? Task 1: Integrated Writing

Time: 20 minutes
Goal: Summarize how the lecture responds to the reading passage

? Template Structure

Paragraph 1 – Introduction:

The reading and the lecture discuss [topic]. While the reading supports [main idea], the lecturer argues against it by presenting three counterpoints.

Paragraph 2 – First Point:

  • The reading claims that [point from reading]
  • The lecturer counters this by saying that [counterpoint from audio]

Paragraph 3 & 4 – Second and Third Points: Follow the same pattern.

Final Tip: Don’t add your opinion. Just compare the points objectively using transition phrases like “however,” “in contrast,” “on the other hand.”

✍️ Task 2: Independent Writing

Time: 30 minutes
Goal: Express your opinion and support it with reasons and examples

? Template Structure

Paragraph 1 – Introduction:
State your position and outline your 2 main reasons.
Example: I believe that studying abroad is beneficial because it exposes students to different cultures and helps them become independent.

Paragraph 2 – First Reason:

  • State the reason clearly
  • Support with 1–2 examples or scenarios

Paragraph 3 – Second Reason:

  • Expand with different reasoning and a personal or real-world example

Paragraph 4 – Conclusion:

Restate your opinion and summarize your two main points.

? Extra Tips for Both Tasks

  • Use linking words: Furthermore, In addition, For example, As a result
  • Stay within word count: Task 1 (~250), Task 2 (~350)
  • Always plan for 2 minutes before writing
  • Check grammar in the last 2 minutes

Conclusion

Templates are not shortcuts — they’re scaffolding for strong writing. Once you memorize these basic formats and practice weekly, you’ll be able to focus more on quality ideas and vocabulary, not structure. Stick with it, and your 25+ score is within reach!
